In my search for a new chore chart I came across a terrific website called Handipoints and it’s free to join. This website is not just for chores, if you need help motivating your child to do their homework or brushing their teeth or to help to stop undesirable behaviour this is a fantastic website. Just make sure you have plenty of time with your child for the initial set up (setting up an account, task charts, goals and a virtual cat) but its well worth it.
Each child has his/her own chart and when they complete a task they check it off online in their own Handiland. In the initial setup you assign values or points to each task which goes toward a specific goal that you and your child decide on.
I found it a bit overwhelming at first and my kids’ charts ended up being three pages long which is too much for any child. So, I broke it down and only put down the tasks that my kids need a reminder for or encouragement to complete. They are still responsible for their daily contributions to the house such as: putting their dirty dishes in the dishwasher, putting their dirty clothes in the hamper and so on. I also printed out the chart but you need to adjust your printer options (margins and scale) so that the tasks fit on one page.
Printing out the chart and placing it in a visible spot like the fridge is a great reminder for your child. I also put the chart in a clear plastic page protector and use a dry erase maker for them to mark off the tasks completed. This way we can just wipe off the check marks at the end of the week and start fresh for the next, after transferring their completes task online in Handipoints. They can also use their points to buy free, fun rewards like clothing for their cats, games, and cartoons.
This website is great for children ages four to fourteen. It’s a positive way to motivate your child and it also promotes responsible behaviour. Great job Handipoints!
