Every once in a while we all get a case of the blues and here are five of my favourite mood boosters:
Watch a good comedy - laughing instantly releases mood-boosting endorphins.
Go for a walk – exercise triggers emotional and neurological changes that can energize your mind and ward off mood problems that can drain energy. Walking is the easiest activity to do and requires no special equipment.
Bright Light - research reveals that two hours of morning sun is very effective in lifting depression. If you can't make it outside just living in a bright home can make a big difference. When light enters the eye, it stimulates the brain to produce serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that helps maintain a "happy feeling," and seems to help keep our moods under control by helping with sleep, calming anxiety, and relieving depression.
Listen to your favourite music – Increased levels of melatonin following music therapy may have contributed to patients' relaxed and calm mood. (Altern Ther Health Med. 1999;5(6):49-57)
Eat a piece of Chocolate - there are several bioactive compounds in chocolate that promote alertness, lessen pain and promote well-being.
